So You Want to Buy Books (and Maybe Other Stuff) in Japan

Welcome back to So You Want to..., the blog series that teaches you how to survive in Japan one specific situation at a time. Today’s mission: shopping.

Part 1: First Contact

The first boss of Japanese shopping isn’t the till. They get you the moment you walk in:

  • いらっしゃいませ！ (Irasshaimase!)
    • Literally: "Welcome (honoured customer)!"
    • Actually means: "I have acknowledged your existence, please browse freely."

Correct response:
- Do not say it back.
- Do not panic and shout "こんにちは".
- Simply nod your head awkwardly and venture onwards.

Part 2: The Final Encounter

So you made it to the till (レジ / reji) and now you have to say something.

Cashier questions you’ll almost certainly hear:

  • 袋はいりますか? / ふくろ は いりますか?

    Fukuro wa irimasu ka?

    Do you need a bag?

  • ポイントカードはお持ちですか? / ポイントカード は おもちですか?

    Pointo kādo wa omochi desu ka?

    Do you have a point card?

  • ラッピングしますか? / ラッピング しますか?

    Rappingu shimasu ka?

    Would you like this wrapped?

  • レシートは宜しいですか? / レシート は ごりよう ですか?

    Reshīto wa yoroshii desu ka?

    Would you like a receipt?

Your move, Yugi:

  • 大丈夫です / だいじょうぶ です

    Daijōbu desu

    No thanks / I’m good.

  • 現金で払います。 / げんきん で はらいます。

    Genkin de haraimasu.

    I’ll pay with cash.

  • カードで払います。 / カード で はらいます。

    Kādo de haraimasu.

    I’ll pay with card.

  • これ、お願いします。 / これ、おねがいします。

    Kore, onegaishimasu.

    Please could I get this?

  • すみません、お願いします。 / すみません、おねがいします。

    Sumimasen, onegaishimasu.

    Excuse me, please (take these things off me and make them legally mine).

Part 3: Finding Stuff Without Crying

You walk into a Japanese bookshop (本屋 / honya) and stare bug-eyed at the display whilst coming to terms with the fact that you have no idea where anything is. Welcome to the club.

Genres you might actually ask for:

  • 漫画 / まんが

    Manga - Manga

  • 文学 / ぶんがく

    Bungaku - Literature/novels

  • 旅行 / りょこう

    Ryokō - Travel

  • 料理 / りょうり

    Ryōri - Cooking

  • 雑誌 / ざっし

    Zasshi - Magazines

  • 洋書 / ようしょ

    Yōsho - Foreign books

  • 学習 / がくしゅう

    Gakushū - Study/reference

Questions you might want to ask:

  • [ジャンル]はどこですか?

    [Janru] wa doko desu ka?

    Where is [genre]?

  • ある本を探しています。 / ある ほん を さがして います。

    Aru hon o sagashite imasu.

    I’m looking for a particular book.

  • [タイトル]はありますか? / [タイトル] は ありますか?

    [Taitoru] wa arimasu ka?

    Do you have [title]?

  • この本はありますか? / この ほん は ありますか?

    Kono hon wa arimasu ka?

    Do you have this? (show phone or piece of paper with picture or title)

  • これはどこにありますか? / これ は どこ に ありますか?

    Kore wa doko ni arimasu ka?

    Where can I find this? (if they just nod after the previous question)

But how are books sorted?

Japanese bookshops usually organise by Japanese syllabary order (あいうえお = a, i, u, e, o followed by the consonants k, s, t, n, h, m, y, r, w with each vowel appended) instead of A–Z. Foreign authors may be lumped into the foreign section.

Practical tip:

  • Look for the first kana in the author’s surname.
    • Example: 村上 春樹 (Murakami Haruki) → surname is 村上 → first kana is む (mu).

Part 4: Uniqlo Survival Guide

Japanese fashion is awesome, but beware if you're tall, as sleeves and trouser legs may be shorter than they appear.

Trying stuff on:

  • 試着できますか? / しちゃく できますか?

    Shichaku dekimasu ka?

    Can I try this on?

  • 試着室はどこですか? / しちゃくしつ は どこですか?

    Shichakushitsu wa doko desu ka?

    Where are the fitting rooms?

Size swapping:

  • もっと大きいサイズはありますか? / もっと おおきい サイズ は ありますか?

    Motto ōkii saizu wa arimasu ka?

    Do you have a larger size?

  • もっと小さいサイズはありますか? / もっと ちいさい サイズ は ありますか?

    Motto chiisai saizu wa arimasu ka?

    Do you have a smaller size?

  • M/L/XLサイズはありますか?

    Emu/Eru/Ekkusu eru saizu wa arimasu ka?

    Do you have M/L/XL?

Types of clothes:

  • シャツ

    Shatsu - Shirt

  • ズボン

    Zubon - Trousers

  • スカート

    Sukāto - Skirt

  • セーター

    Sētā - Sweater/jumper

  • ジャケット

    Jakketo - Jacket

  • コート

    Kōto - Coat

  • ワンピース / ドレス

    Wanpīsu / Doresu - Dress (the latter is more formal, the former more casual)

  • 靴 / くつ

    Kutsu - Shoes

Example:

  • Where are the coats?
    • コートはどこですか？
    • Kōto wa doko desu ka?
    • You're going to notice a theme with how you ask for where something is, but it feels weird to skip it out in a section so have it anyway.

Part 5: Multi Track Drifting (lol funny it's track like music)

Welcome to the Tower Records tutorial textbook.

Music shops in Japan are sorted much like books: by genre, then by artist name in あいうえお order.

Genres you might look for:

  • ロック

    Rokku - Rock

  • ポップ

    Poppu - Pop

  • ジャズ

    Jazu - Jazz

  • クラシック

    Kurasikku - Classical

  • アニメ

    Anime - Anime

Useful asks:

  • [ジャンル]はどこですか?

    [Janru] wa doko desu ka?

    Where is [genre]?

  • レコードはどこですか? / レコード は どこ ですか?

    Rekōdo wa doko desu ka?

    Where are the vinyls?

  • [アーティスト/タイトル]はありますか? / [アーティスト/タイトル] は ありますか?

    [Ātisuto/Taitoru] wa arimasu ka?

    Do you have [artist/title]?

Part 6: Barold The Gathering (of Cards)

This one's for you Harry.

Key vocab:

  • シングル

    Shinguru - Single cards

  • ブースター

    Būsutā - Booster pack

  • ボックス

    Bokkusu - Booster box

  • デッキ

    Dekki - Deck

How to get what you want:

  • あのカードをお願いします。 / あの カード を おねがいします。

    Ano kādo o onegaishimasu.

    That card, please.

  • あそこからカードをお願いできますか? / あそこ から カード を おねがい できますか?

    Asoko kara kādo o onegai dekimasu ka?

    Could I get a card from over there?

  • ブースターボックスをお願いします。 / ブースター ボックス を おねがいします。

    Būsutā bokkusu o onegaishimasu.

    Could I get a booster box?

  • [カード名]はありますか? / [カードめい] は ありますか?

    [Kādo mei] wa arimasu ka?

    Do you have [card name]? (in Japanese) (good luck)

Bonus: The Tax-Free Counter

This section will be moot as of November 2026 (at the time of writing) but I'll do it anyway. From November 2026 you get tax refunds at the airport on your way home instead.

How it works:

  1. Purchases usually need to total ¥5,500 or more after tax in one session at that shop.
  2. You need your actual passport (not a copy, not a photo).
  3. Keep the receipt - you probably won't need to show it at the airport, but you'll have a sad time if you do and didn't keep it.
  4. Don’t open or use consumables before you leave Japan, or the tax fairy gets mad.

Useful phrases:

  • 免税カウンターはどこですか? / めんぜい カウンター は どこ ですか?

    Menzei kauntā wa doko desu ka?

    Where is the tax-free counter?

  • 免税で買えますか? / めんぜい で かえますか?

    Menzei de kaemasu ka?

    Can I do tax-free shopping? (not all shops have this amenity - those that do will usually have a sign somewhere)

If all else fails, remember: 大丈夫です (daijōbu desu) will get you out of most situations, while お願いします (onegaishimasu) will get you into them.
